How to grow your own foods at home

It is relatively easy to plant and grow a garden if you have enough space to do it. Even a small plot can produce healthy and tasty vegetables to enjoy during the warm months of summer. Produce that cannot be used at once can be frozen or canned, and stored for winter use.

If you have never planted a garden, there are a few simple things you need to know. The most important part of raising a good garden is having the right kind of soil. Your garden space may have rocky or sandy soil, and you will have to do some work to prepare it for planting. First you should till it as deep as possible and pick out as many rocks as possible. It is well worth the cost to buy several bags of garden soil, and you may want to get the kind that has slow release fertilizer in it. Work the garden soil and a bag or two of peat moss into your existing garden space. Once the soil is a good consistency, rake it smooth and you are ready to plant your seeds.

There are many different types of vegetables you can grow, so decide on the ones you most prefer and go to buy your seeds. Each type of vegetable will have a few varieties to pick from so read the information on the seed packs carefully to make your decision. Take note of the number of days to maturity for each plant to determine if your growing season is long enough for the plants to produce mature vegetables. Now that you know what you want to plant, make a plan for your garden space as to where each type of plant should grow. Follow the directions on the seed packets carefully, and once your garden is planted, make sure to water and weed it regularly.

Now you only need to wait patiently for the seeds to germinate and the baby plants to emerge. You may need to protect your garden from scavenging critters that will happily munch the tender plants. A mesh fence that is firmly attached to the ground will usually keep the marauders out. If the thieves are birds, a net can be positioned over your garden to protect it.

It is very enjoyable and quite easy to grow some fresh vegetable for you and your family to enjoy, and also provides a great sense of accomplishment.

Enlist the kids to save even more time. Children love to create and creating a fun or beautiful look for the table is a wonderful way to let loose their creative side. Also, just imagine how proud they will feel as the guests to the party are complimenting their fine work.

The Summer Olympics are upon us and many people are throwing parties for friends and relatives so they can all enjoy the events together. A great way to make this party more delightful would be by creating a fabulous, homemade Olympic table to lay the food on.

For instance, one could create the podium on which the athletes get medaled. One could go as elaborate as to use clay, or as simple as three strong cardboard boxes, decorated and covered to resemble this podium. Then place a wonderful dip in the gold spot, and two different chips in each the silver and bronze spots. It is a display that will enhance the entire look and feel of the table.

One could also, for fun, make cardboard torches, fill them with fruits and turn them on their sides like for a wonderful Olympic cornucopia. Depending on the event that is being viewed that day, the way the food is displayed can reflect the same event.

If the event is swimming then what would be better than serving punch out of a homemade swimming pool? To do this, get a large white rectangular plastic tub. Holes can be poked in the edges so swimming lanes can be created. Using shoelace licorice, tie to the edges and drape across the tub and tie it again on the other side. Repeat to create however many lanes are needed. Then add a light blue punch.

These are just a few suggestions of how one can display their food by using homemade displays. It is a fun project for the entire family. Let the imagination of each person in the family free and watch the table go from drab to fab with a simple stroke of the mind.

Where to Travel to Indulge in Exotic Foods

All human beings, no matter how unique and individualistic, share one commonality- the need to eat. While eating is a necessity, is is also an activity to be enjoyed. Various foods induce feelings of satisfaction, and there are some places in the world that create cuisines unique to their locale that should be tried during one’s lifetime.

Those in the London area should be sure to visit St. John for the chance to sample a dish at Fergus Henderson’s. While all too many restaurants cut corners and obtain their meat at a lower price, they compromise the quality. Animals that are raised in close proximity and pumped full of steroids do not produce the same taste as those that are raised in more humane conditions. Fergus Henderson’s ensures that their meat comes from farms that treat their animals with proper respect, and this fact is reflected in the high quality taste in each and every meal they serve.

Singapore offers those who enjoy trying new, exotic foods the experience of a lifetime at Sin Huat Eating House. The appearance of the restaurant is sub par, and the service is not necessarily top notch, but the food to be enjoyed is unique and worth these small compromises. Visitors of this restaurant are able to indulge on crab bee hoon from Sri Lanka smothered in spicy sauce and noodles. This is a seafood lovers paradise. The food comes at a hefty price but is worth the memory and experience.

Sukiyabashi Jiro in Japan is ran by Jiro Ono who has likely attained more experience in preparing deletable sushi than anyone else alive. His creations are sure to entice even those who are skeptical of the thought of consuming undercooked meat. Jiro Ono knows the precise way to make sushi taste just right. A Japan tour will be worth it because the food there is incredible. Making a trip out to see Jiro would be a highlight for many.

Etxebarri in Axpe, Spain provides an array of exotic tastes sure to throw the palate for a loop. Meat from animals such as eels, prawns and oysters are grilled over coals. While it is true that many of these items are difficult to grill, special accommodations at Etxebarri make it possible to enjoy this unique cuisine.

It is not always necessary to travel the world over to eat exotic food. New York City offers a variety of options. Visitors of Ali’s Kebab Café can enjoy Egyptian food while Maharlika offers Filipino options. Whatever the cuisine, the Big Apple can usually accommodate.
